Blue Barrens Farm has grown wild blueberries from a drafty old house and barn in Cherryfield's historic district since 1989, two generations deep in a town that calls itself the blueberry capital of the world. The family manages about 200 acres of organic lowbush barrens across Cherryfield, Township 25, Wesley, and South Trescott, working the old rhythm: spring burning, sulfur to keep the soil acid, and hives set out in May. The plants flower as the Italian honey bees and native pollinators arrive, and the fruit ripens from late July through late August.
