North Chester Orchard grows about 1,300 dwarf and semi-dwarf apple trees on six acres of the former Whitney farm in Chester, where the farmhouse has stood on its fieldstone foundation since 1886. The first trees went in back in 1989, and Erik and Melissa Frodahl now run the orchard.
Pick-your-own covers apples, pumpkins, and U-cut Christmas trees in November, with bees on the property pollinating the crops and producing honey. The apple list is long and thoughtful: McIntosh, Cortland, Paula Red, Zestar!, Ginger Gold, Honeycrisp, Wealthy, Sweet 16, Pioneer, Liberty, and Macoun.
