Sara Hodges and John Wright started Sparkplug Farm on leased land on Vinalhaven Island in 2012, growing six acres of vegetables and running a micro dairy twelve miles out to sea. In 2017 they bought land in Leeds and rebuilt the farm around pasture-based livestock.

Their 100% grass-fed beef comes from Milking Shorthorn, Milking Devon, and Red Devon crosses moved to fresh pasture once or twice a day, a herd that has grown from six cows to about thirty. Forest-raised pigs added in 2019 root through the woods for acorns and grubs alongside free-choice non-GMO grain, and close to 2,000 Golden Comet hens, MOFGA-certified since 2023, move to fresh grass daily and eat certified organic feed.
